The Liverpool legend in frame for Rangers reappointment after Martin is dismissed.
The former Rangers boss is a leading candidate for a shock return to the Scottish giants following the announced departure of manager the former Southampton coach.
Martin's disastrous spell at Rangers comes to a close
His troubled period in Glasgow concluded with the manager exiting the the away venue via a back exit and a vehicle on standby after a level finish which left Rangers a significant margin from the summit of the premier division after just seven fixtures.
Incensed supporters had gathered around the club coach in the stadium location, expressing their anger.
Rangers board unwilling to part with the manager
The Rangers board had been reluctant to part with Martin, who was only hired in last month, despite strong objections from the fanbase.
However, there was an understanding that the 39-year-old’s role had become unsustainable.
The team have secured just a single victory of their Premiership matches to date, which has been combined with disappointing showings on the continental stage.
In total, the manager managed only five wins of 17 competitive matches, with a passive, muddled style of play that won over few admirers.
“Even though changeovers need patience, results have not met the club’s expectations,” stated a official communication on the weekend.
“Deputy manager the assistant, and first-team coach Mike Williamson, will also be leaving. Martin and his backroom team have worked exceptionally hard throughout their tenure. We are grateful for their efforts and hope for the best for the time ahead.”
Steven Gerrard secured the championship with the club
Gerrard secured the championship with the Ibrox side in the 2020-21 season, their lone triumph since that year.
His work in the Scottish league before then, combined with struggles at Villa, creates uncertainty about his managerial capabilities.
Yet he is highly regarded by the very set of fans Rangers desperately need back on side.
The reappointment of the former Reds star, who most recently coached in the Middle East, would prove hugely popular.
The coach will also be mindful of what few options he has to be a manager in major divisions.
Martin’s exit will heighten focus on Thelwell
The coaching change will intensify scrutiny on Kevin Thelwell, the Ibrox director.
He had been hugely supportive of the coach while announcing a net spend of £20m in the transfer window.
Martin had signed a long-term deal.
Martin's past roles
The manager, who had formerly managed the League One side and Swansea, led the Saints to promotion to the top flight in 2024 after being appointed the prior offseason.
He was let go last the end of the year after the Saints managed only one win of their initial 16 matches.
He was named the interim boss's replacement in last month, after the caretaker boss had replaced the sacked Clement in winter.
