Munich UAV Disruptions Add to the Continent’s Security Concerns
Munich joins a growing number of EU airfields affected by unmanned aircraft reports in the past few days, with seventeen flight cancellations, fifteen rerouted, and thousands of passengers dealing with delays to their trips during the night.
Several people claimed spotting drones in the vicinity of the airport, with a further sighting afterwards established within the restricted zone, obliging flight regulators to suspend operations awaiting inquiry.
It remains unclear how many, or what kind, drones were involved.
The disruption comes shortly prior to the final days of the Oktoberfest event, which had earlier encountered issues a few days ago due to a reported danger in the urban area.
Germany’s flight safety authority, the German flight management organization in charge of the nation’s skies, stated in the past few days that drone sightings close to airports are rising, with 144 cases to date in the current year, compared with 113 in 2024, and 99 in the year before last.
Anticipate the sightings and the related problems to reignite the discussion about the EU’s sky protection, following the EU leaders’ meeting in the Danish capital showed varying opinions – primarily along regional divisions – about the newly proposed “drone wall” project.
