The Fianna Fáil nominee Jim Gavin has announced his withdrawal from the Irish presidential election immediately.

He was poised to be among three contenders vying for Ireland's head of state, alongside Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

Nonetheless, late Sunday he stated via a statement he had "made a mistake which did not align with his character and the standards he upholds."

"Considering all these factors, I have decided to withdraw from the election for president with immediate effect and return to the arms of my family," he said in his announcement.

Further updates expected.
