2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Year of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Frogs are not at all new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming looks especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs offer natural creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.
A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
